The Kingdom of Tonga is an archipelago of over 170 islands located in the South Pacific Ocean, divided into the three main groups Tongatapu, Ha'apai and Vava'u. Vava'u is about 240 km north of Tongatapu, where the international is located. The capital of the Vava'u group is Neiafu with approxomately 6000 inhabitants. Fua'amotu International Airport, about 15km (9.3mi) southeast of Nuku'alofa (Capital) is the main entry point for most visitors into Tonga. It's straightforward to fly to Tonga direct from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Hawaii, but if you're coming from anywhere else you will have to fly to one of those points first. To get to Vava'u from Tongatapu we suggest flying with Chathams Pacific which takes around 60 minutes Lupepau'u airport, Vava'u.
